V.I.U (Value in Use) Assessment – Technical pricing of manganese ore.

International quotation.

Manganese ore

It is based on the price per point of Mn, given in USD/dmtu (dry metric tonne unit), published by reference companies such as CRU, Metal Bulletin, Roskill, and Tex Report.

This reference price considers a benchmark ore with 44% Mn content. Ores with Mn content above 44% receive premiums; below that, they suffer commercial demerits.

However, ores with the same Mn content can have significantly different prices. The reason lies in the levels of other constituents: Fe, SiO₂, Al₂O₃, CaO, MgO, P, and other elements in smaller quantities.

The relationships between Mn content and these constituents form the so-called Ore Competitiveness Factors, which determine the real commercial price. Among the main chemical ratios evaluated are:

  • Mn/Fe – directly influences furnace reduction efficiency

  • Mn/SiO₂ – impacts flux consumption and slag basicity

  • Mn/Al₂O₃ – affects slag viscosity and operational stability

  • Mn/CaO, Mn/MgO – related to burden fluidity and melting point

In addition to chemical ratios, physical characteristics such as moisture, mechanical strength, percentage of fines, and particle size also make up the ore's Value in Use.
